What is Debt management?

The standard financial definition of debt management is the assistance of a third party to a debtor in managing their debts and repaying them. There are many companies that offer debt counseling to people, they also provide the services of debt management for people who are heavily in debt and have a damaged credit history.
In simple terms debt management could be spending less than what you earn. But in proper terms debt management is the structured plan that is instituted by a third party to help in the repaying of your debts. This plan could be instituted as a result of court order or of personal initiation.
There are a series of steps involved in debt management. These steps happen with the help of the debtor himself. The debtor has to provide the details of all his debts to the debt management agency and they then work to negotiate terms on the debtor’s behalf with their creditors. However there are some creditors that are not included in the list of the creditors to be handled by the debt management agency such as, secured loans like car loans and home loans.
The financial status of the debtor is assessed and this way all the costs are calculated, for instance, the amounts due on his various debts and his cost of living etc. This way the maximum amount of money that is available for the repayments of his debts can be known.
Participation in a debt management plan is sure to impact your credit score at that moment as whatever credit can be sought will be unavailable but eventually becoming debt free will help your credit score to swing back. If your debt is less than $10,000 US then you are eligible to qualify for third party debt management.
Debt management services agencies should be registered with the Better Business Bureau in order to be legally safe. Also they should not charge any unreasonable fees for their services to you, apart from nominal administrative costs.
Debt Management services also provide debt counseling, this way you are initiated into staying away from debt in the future. This way the purpose of the debt management is completed. Otherwise if you fall into debt in the future then there is no point of seeking this debt management now.
Choose an agency which you feel is reliable and caters to your individual needs and problems.
